At the Mt Olympus Home For Non-Functioning Deities, the old gods were all agog. A new resident was being admitted. The company got old quickly when you had to spend eternity with the same faces. That was why a new divinity was was so welcome. Even Gods grew weary of each others company aeon after aeon. The same old myths, the same catalog of miracles performed and punishments administered.
But there came a time in every religion when the last worshipper died or converted and just like that another deity was out of a job. Gods came and Gods went. In the course of human history thousands of deities have been worshiped and abandoned. Tribal Gods mostly. Gods whose names have vanished with the tribes that revered, feared and venerated them. Gods who believed their popularity was as immortal as they were, but it was not to be. Religion is a fickle business. It has its trends and its fashions. One day polytheism was all the rage then it was monotheism that topped the charts. That was why a new retiree was big news. The old residence whispered among themselves excitedly. They craned their necks for a better view. Who was it? No, not him. I’ll bet he thought he’d last forever.
