The Quantum Road

by Robyn Cogert

Good Morning Boston! It is 6:10 a.m. on December 10th and here is our top story…

Brian turned down the radio. He already heard the news twice that morning. Once before leaving home, and once at the top of his commute. A commute that covered two counties, five towns, and 45 miles. The pay for his work justified the distance. This time of year, the sky would not be light until 7am so the road was dark and cold. He took a sip of coffee with his right hand and held the wheel with his left.

What was funny about this part of I-95, is that it seemed to go on forever. You could drive 5 miles without seeing an exit sign and street lights were few and far between. If you weren’t paying attention it felt like the road went on forever. Some days he could swear they added highway to the highway because the commute could be so long.

Fortunately, on this morning there was very little traffic. It was a local holiday for the schools. Only employees and travelers would be on it. But Brian thought it was too light. And once the coffee kicked in, he realized he didn’t see anyone else on the road. Now plowing through the darkness, and curious, he turned up the radio.

“Wait a minute, he said to himself. Didn’t I just hear that. I can’t believe they would make such a mistake”!

Brian racked his early morning brain to try to understand what was happening. And where was the next sign, for the next exit. There is no reason to stop the car, in the cold, on a dark highway, so he continued to press forward. What is going on, he asked out loud. Now concerned, he looked at his car clock, it read 6:10am. He looked at his odometer, 25861. He drove another few miles and looked at his controls again.

6:10am and 25861 miles.

How is this happening? What is happening? I don’t understand.

Now he would use his ‘life-line’. He tapped on his steering wheel to activate voice-control and said, ‘Call Dan’. The car replied, ‘There is no phone connected.’

“What? I do have a phone connected right here”, Brian yelled at his car. He reached frantically into his laptop bag next to him digging for his phone. He found it and could not turn it on because the battery was dead. He threw it back in his bag.

6:10am and 25861 miles.

How is this happening?

Brian turned on his high-beams. “There has got to be an exit sign soon”! His default now was to keep driving and talking to himself out loud.

Good Morning Boston! It is 6:10 a.m. on December 10th and here is our top story…

This time he would listen. It would ground him and help bring him back to normal.

Radio continues:  For the first time, two neutron stars in a nearby galaxy have been observed engaging in a spiral death dance around one another until they collided. What resulted from that collision is being called an "unprecedented" discovery that is alike to a black hole. Spokespersons for NASA believe this rippling space-time grid represents gravitational waves that travel out from the collision, eventually reaching our galaxy. Its impact is yet to be identified.

Brian could feel his heart skip a beat. He thought to himself, is that what is happening to me? What do I know of space-time? Not something I studied in school, or ever.

He takes another sip of his coffee. It is still hot and the cup is still full!

6:10am and 25861 miles.

I should stop. I should just pull over and stop but it’s still dark. What would be the point? And I still haven’t reached the next exit.

Brian turns up the radio dial…
